SAN FRANCISCO – A federal appeals court in San Francisco upheld the use of the words “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance and “In God We Trust” on U.S. currency, rejecting arguments on Thursday that the phrases violate the separation of church and state.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel rejected two legal challenges by Sacramento atheist Michael Newdow, who claimed the references to God disrespect his religious beliefs.

“The Pledge is constitutional,” Judge Carlos Bea wrote for the majority in the 2-1 ruling. “The Pledge of Allegiance serves to unite our vast nation through the proud recitation of some of the ideals upon which our Republic was founded.”

The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now will permanently surrender its Ohio business license by June1 as part of a legal settlement with the conservative Buckeye Institute for Public Policy Solutions, both sides said yesterday.

ACORN was active in Ohio in the 2006 and 2008 elections, working to register thousands of low-income people to vote and get them to the polls. The group’s efforts were marred by irregularities, including one case in which ACORN workers allegedly induced a Cleveland man to register to vote 72 times, offering cigarettes as an incentive.

The Buckeye Institute’s 1851 Center for Constitutional Law teamed with two Warren County residents to sue ACORN in Warren County Common Pleas Court just before the 2008 election. The residents alleged that their rights were abridged by thousands of fraudulent voter registrations, each representing “a potential illegal vote that has the capacity to dilute (legitimate) votes.”

…Yesterday’s settlement is mostly confidential, said Maurice A. Thompson, the conservative group’s attorney.

“They will surrender their business license by June 1 and cease to operate in Ohio and cease to support or enable other groups to do what they do,” Thompson said.

Alphonse A. Gerhardstein, the attorney for ACORN in Ohio, said the organization already has left Ohio “for reasons that are unrelated to this litigation.” After the 2008 election, in which some credited or blamed ACORN for the election of Barack Obama as president, ACORN has dialed back its political activity across the country.

ACORN continues to deny any wrongdoing in Ohio, Gerhardstein said. The settlement doesn’t award court costs or attorney’s fees to either side, he said.

“They’ve already stopped (working in Ohio), and they’re going to formalize that by June 1, 2010,” Gerhardstein said.

Now we just need for the other states to follow through and get rid of this corrupt organization.

The Republicans’ moratorium is more extensive than the House Appropriations Committee’s ban in that it applies to all earmarks for all members of the caucus.

…House Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence (Ind.) hailed the decision in an interview on Fox News.

“Republicans did something very dramatic today that’s going to make it very uncomfortable for business as usual,” he said. “So now House Republicans are going to the American people and saying we want a clean break from the runaway spending in the past. And that’s going to be quite a contrast from this Congress and the administration.”

Senate Republicans appeared receptive to the House’s proposal Thursday.

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) offered a one-year moratorium on earmarks on the Senate floor as the House Republicans were taking their vote. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) specifically complimented the House’s plan in a Twitter post.

This is really good news and conservatives and tea party members should be excited with the direction the Republican party is going.

Democrats have had four years to drain the so-called “swamp” of corruption and have, as Nancy Pelosi said, “The most honest, the most open and the most ethical Congress in history.” In four years the so-called “swamp” has gotten more corrupt. It’s time to find some fresh faces, time to vote out ALL corrupt politicians.

US President Barack Obama has joked that half of the 40,000 letters that pour into the White House each day brand him an “idiot”.

Tongue-in-cheek, the President remarked that his staff did not spare him the wrath of his correspondents – selecting a representative portion of 10 letters for him to read when he returns to the White House residence at night.

“I will tell you, that my staff is very even-handed, because about half of these letters call me an idiot!” Mr Obama said overnight, chuckling at his own joke during a rally in Saint Louis, Missouri.

The President went on to make a serious point, saying that many senior citizens wrote to him to tell him to keep the Government’s hands off Medicare, a health plan for elderly people.

Government is staging a full-fledged control assault on this country and, as much as I wish this weren’t true, we are the ones left to fight it. Because apparently there aren’t enough on the inside willing to do so.

Look at this: It’s a map of how much land is owned in America by the federal government. They own nearly 650 million acres of land — almost 30 percent of the land area of the United States.

But look at how it’s distributed: It’s overwhelmingly in the West. Nevada is almost 90 percent federally owned land. Alaska is nearly three quarters federally owned. Compare that to the East. States are in the single digits. Even Texas is only 2 percent federally owned land.

Why isn’t government rushing to “protect” land in, say, Connecticut or New Jersey? Let me show you this: our national resources in comparison to federally owned land. It seems the land we are protecting is also the most oil and natural resource rich land.

Here’s another map: Shale oil is found around the world but the largest deposits by far are in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. Last year, government went after 9 million acres of land in the West in the name of saving the wild horses and stopping any activities that “would destroy the area’s special character.”

If we tapped these areas, we could be closer to energy independence. You want to pay off the debt? The West is Fort Knox.

The house is on fire! Why wouldn’t they drill there instead of crossing their fingers and hoping someone creates a car that runs on magic fairy dust? I’m not even saying for oil — natural gas! Natural gas.

This is all about more power for the government and less freedom and personal rights for “we the people.”

(ABC News)- The government racked up a record-high monthly budget deficit of $220.9 billion in February, the Treasury Department announced today.

The latest flood of red ink brings the total deficit for the first five months of the current fiscal year to $651 billion, far exceeding the $589 billion shortfall for the same timeframe in the last fiscal year.

The government ended the 2009 fiscal year with a record $1.4 trillion shortfall. The Obama administration has forecast a $1.56 trillion deficit for this year.

Pelosi, in an interview with Bloomberg and PBS host Charlie Rose, hinted that she could pass Democrats’ healthcare plans through the House if they were brought up this week.

“Yes,” Pelosi said when asked if she believed the House would end up having the votes to approve health care.

“If we took it up today, yes,” the Speaker quickly added.
